PhotoCraft Download: No Install Needed, or Build the Desktop App

Looking for a PhotoCraft download? The web editor needs none — open it and edit for free. The open-source desktop app builds from GitHub with Rust. Both paths compared.

The short answer

There is no PhotoCraft download to install for the web editor — and that is the point. PhotoCraft Web runs entirely in your browser: open the page and you are editing, with no installer, no account and no upload. If you specifically want the open-source desktop application, it is built from source on GitHub with Rust. Both paths are free; this page walks through each.

Path 1: no download at all (recommended for most people)

The web editor needs nothing on your machine except a browser:

  1. Open PhotoCraft Web.
  2. Drop in an image — or click Try a sample image to experiment first.
  3. Edit with layers, blend modes, film presets, text and shapes.
  4. Export to PNG, JPEG or WebP at full resolution.

Your images are processed locally on your device and never touch a server, so there is also nothing to uninstall later. When you are done, the tab closes and your machine is exactly as it was.

Path 2: build the open-source desktop app

If you want the native PhotoCraft application, it lives on GitHub and is built from source:

  1. Install Rust (version 1.95 or newer) — the project publishes setup notes for Windows (MSVC Build Tools), macOS and Linux.
  2. Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/storytold/photocraft
  3. Build it: cargo build --release from the repository root.
  4. Run the desktop app from target/release.

The desktop app is in active early development. Features land quickly, but expect rough edges — that is what reading the source, filing issues and building from main implies. There is no installer wizard yet; the build output is the app.

Web vs desktop, honestly

| | PhotoCraft Web | Desktop (from source) | | --- | --- | --- | | Setup | None | Rust toolchain + build | | Speed to first edit | Seconds | Minutes (first build) | | Editing today | Layers, blend modes, presets, text, crop, export | Broader command set, evolving fast | | Updates | Automatic — always the current version | You pull and rebuild | | Best for | Quick, private, everyday edits | Following or contributing to native development |

FAQ

Is the PhotoCraft download free? There is nothing to download for the web editor, and it is free. The desktop source code is open source and free to build.

Is it safe? The web editor processes images entirely on your device — nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to leak. The desktop project is open source, so its code is public and auditable.

Do I need the desktop app to use PhotoCraft online? No. The web editor is its own independent engine and needs nothing installed. The desktop app is a separate project for native workflows.
